Why did you study Mathematics at University?

Honestly, because Biology/Chemistry could not hold my attention so I had to abandon my original plan to become a Marine Biologist. I was captivated by the beauty of Mathematics. It seemed to hold the key to a lot of worldly secrets.

Describe what you do now and how mathematics is useful to you.

I am an Application Developer for the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO).

Studying Mathematics has certainly improved my logical thinking skills and given me the ability to tackle complex problems in any subject area.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of doing a degree in Mathematics?

If you are fascinated and awed by the beauty of our world and you want to dig a little deeper, Mathematics is for you.
However, on a more practical level you definitely need to have drive, determination and discipline. Do you like to torture your brain?
Then I say: Go for it !! :-)

Would you recommend that people study Maths in Maynooth?

10 years ago, when I studied Mathematics at Maynooth, it was a personal department, with mostly very friendly and helpful professors and also some very enthusiastic and dedicated ones. I have very fond memories of studying at Maynooth.
