Assistant Professor in Law at Maynooth School of Law and Criminology, Dr. Yağmur Hortoğlu recently spoke on the Turkish television channel, Sözcü TV, about the ongoing civil unrest in France. Having lived and studied in Paris for many years, Dr. Hortoğlu was able to provide in-depth context around the underlying factors that have resulted in these riots: systemic racism and police brutality against people of colour, regardless of whether a person is born and raised in France or not. Dr. Hortoğlu explains that these events should not be framed as random criminal activities or as a result of immigration. The explanation goes far deeper. The segment (in Turkish) can be watched here.
