Biography

Dr Dania Movia is an Assistant Professor in Biomedical & Health Services at the Department of Biology at Maynooth University and a Principal Investigator of the Kathleen Lonsdale Institute for Human Health Research. She is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Discipline of Radiation Therapy of Trinity College Dublin (Ireland).

Dr Movia graduated in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technologies in 2007 from the University of Trieste (Italy). She then obtained her PhD at Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) in 2012, and she was awarded a Special Purpose Certificate in Academic Practice and a Master in Arts (jure officii) by the same university in 2018 and 2023, respectively.

Dr Movia is a member of several professional bodies and organisations, which include the Irish Lung Cancer Alliance (ILCA) and Cancer Trials Ireland. She is an active member of the scientific advisory panels of Animal-Free Research UK and FRAME-UK.

Dr Movia has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications. She acted as Guest Editor in Animals (MDPI) and Front. Bioeng. Biotechnol. (Frontiers) journals, and she co-edited the Cancer Cell Culture book for the Methods in Molecular Biology series, published by Springer Nature. She is currently an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Pharmacology journal.

Research Interests

Dr Movia champions the reduction/replacement of animal testing via research and training of young scientists. Her current research work focuses on developing new, non-animal methodologies (NAMs) that can replace animal studies in lung cancer and lung toxicity research.

She has received funding in excess of €2M from several national, European and international (UK and USA) agencies including the Irish Research Council, Science Foundation Ireland, the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing, and the European Commission.
