Our Rising Teachers and Rising Leaders recently participated in a series of creative writing workshops, facilitated by Fighting Words. Fighting Words are an organisation that help children and young people, and adults who did not have this opportunity as children, to discover and harness the power of their own imaginations and creative writing skills.
Workshop 1:
On December 8th 2018, the Rising Teachers and Rising Leaders, in their mentoring groups, participated in a workshop during which they created a shared piece of creative writing. At its core, Fighting Words is about using the creative practice of writing and storytelling to strengthen participants to be resilient, creative and successful shapers of their own lives. One of the central aims of the workshop was to prepare the Rising Teachers to help facilitate a creative writing workshop for primary children. The Rising Leaders mentored the Rising Teachers on what the role of the teacher would be like and how best to support the primary children’s creative writing.
Workshop 2:
There was great excitement around the School of Education Building on Saturday, January 19th 2019, when the Rising Teachers, Rising Leaders Programme were delighted to welcome 50 primary children to Maynooth University. These avid and talented writers participated in a creative writing workshop run by the fantastic Fighting Words team, led by their Education Director, Dr Orla Lehane. During the workshop, the Rising Teachers were given an opportunity to work with the children and help them with their story writing. It was a tremendous experience for all concerned and the proof was in the quality of the stories that the children produced on the day!
