Mary Patricia Acom and Sandra Mpanyira, both studying LLM Global Legal Studies at the Department of Law, gave their own perspectives on Service Learning.

'I am Mary Patricia Acom, pursuing LLM Global Legal Studies at Maynooth University. I am a lawyer, an advocate who previously worked in the Legal Aid Sector, The Uganda Law Society’s Legal Aid Project. My work included legal representation of indigent and marginalized individuals and communities in courts of law, and advocacy for human rights and policy reforms. I am undertaking placement at the Irish Refugee Council, where I have been supporting the law center team with research, preparation of legal memoranda and have attended case management training and weekly team meetings. This placement is significantly enhancing my career.'

'My name is Sandra Mpanyira, and I am currently studying for a Masters in Global Legal Studies at Maynooth. Prior to taking up studies in Ireland I was practising as a human rights lawyer in Zimbabwe. My decision to study in Ireland was motivated by a need to gain a global perspective to the human rights challenges in my home country and the African continent in general. Over and above my studies, my work placement with University of Sanctuaries Ireland has given me an opportunity to gain practical experience working in matters related to my field. I have had the opportunity to work with inspiring individuals and organizations that are dedicated to the cause of protecting human rights. It has so far been avery fulfilling journey working with people from different backgrounds and professions, united by one goal.'
