The Postgraduate Diploma in German aims to provide students who already have a background in German Studies at undergraduate level with an opportunity to develop their interest in and knowledge and understanding of the language, literatures and cultures of the German-speaking world. As well as increased linguistic and intercultural competence, the programme also offers students the opportunity to develop their awareness of a variety of theoretical approaches to critical analysis; to broaden their intellectual experience; to improve their intercultural and communication skills; and to develop their transferable skills, such as research skills, presentation skills, teamwork, organization skills and time management.

BA involving German Studies or a cognate discipline (e.g. Lehramt, linguistics, literary cultural studies) with at least a II.1 degree, or equivalent. Applicants must have a recognised primary degree which is considered equivalent to Irish university primary degree level.

Minimum CEFR Proficiency level of B2.2 in German and C1.1 in English.

The structure of the Postgraduate Diploma (Level 9) in German is very similar to the MA in German. However, it is awarded after completing 60 credits of taught modules, whereas the MA is awarded after completing 90 credits of taught modules and the MA thesis (30 credits).

Course Duration: 1 year Full-time

The Postgraduate Diploma in German equips students for a number of career paths. These include: teaching at various levels, school management, business, politics, publishing, materials’ development, translation, adult education and support, further study at MA, MLitt or PhD level.
