The MA in Finance is a stimulating and challenging programme that provides international quality training in Economics, Finance and Econometrics. Through a combination of theoretical principles and empirical tools, the programme emphasises ‘problem solving’ and equips successful graduates with economic, financial, quantitative and communication skills that are highly sought by employers in the public and private sectors.

 

This degree is part of the Maynooth University Affiliation Program of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute.

The degree is targeted at high quality students that have obtained at least a 2.1 in Economics or Finance or a degree with a substantial Mathematical quantitative component such as Mathematics or Statistics, Engineering or Physics at undergraduate level, or in a postgraduate conversion course such as a Higher Diploma in Finance, or equivalent. Applicants must have a recognised primary degree that is considered equivalent to Irish university primary degree level.

Minimum English language requirements: please visit Maynooth University International Office website for information about English language tests accepted and required scores. The requirements specified are applicable for both EU and non-EU applicants.

Students without a Finance background may apply for the two-year MA Economics (MHH74).

The course is structured to be stimulating and challenging. Students take core modules in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics and Financial Economics, as well as specialised field modules that may include Financial Risk Analysis, Advanced Derivatives, Corporate Finance, International Finance, Market Microstructure, International Trade and Labour Economics. Students are also required to undertake an independent research thesis, which will be supervised by a staff member, by using skills attained from the taught modules.

As financial markets become more integrated across the globe, the career prospects of our graduates have become greatly enhanced, as graduates are equipped for a wide variety of careers. Graduates of this programme have excellent employment records at home and abroad, with graduates working in most of the major financial centres of the world, e.g. New York, Chicago, Hong Kong, London, as well as Dublin. Recent graduates are currently enjoying careers in stockbroking, bond trading, investment strategy, portfolio fund management and investment and retail banking in the private sector. Others have taken up research positions at the Central Bank of Ireland, while some have continued to Ph.D. programmes to pursue an academic career. The diverse career paths reflect the adaptability and flexibility of our graduates.
