A warm welcome to our incoming First Arts cohort taking Sociology and/or Politics, to returning students in Second and Third Arts, and to our new Masters and PhD students.  And farewell to the class of 2017!  We hope you find happiness and success in the next chapter of your lives.

If you would like to find out about the kind of high quality work produced by undergraduates in their final year check out this year's top student theses. The Justine Horgan Memorial prize for best B.A. research project presented in the Department will be awarded to Eimear Dolan.  Congratulations Eimear. We look forward to seeing you at the prize giving ceremony in November 2017.

Sociology Prize Winners 2017 

  • Stephen Dooley is to be awarded the McKevitt Memorial Prize for the best performance in the First Year Sociology Examination. 
  • Cliona Conway & Ciara Larney are both to be awarded the Newman Memorial Prize for the best performance in the Second Year Sociology Examination. 
  • Eithne Quinn is to be awarded the Professor Liam Ryan Memorial Prize for the best performance in the Sociology B.A. Degree Examination. 
  • Shannen McGregor and Jason Quinn are to be awarded jointly the Coffey Memorial Prize for the best performance in the MA in Sociology. 

Politics Prize Winners 2017 

  • Shane Gough & Brian Kenny are both to be awarded the First Year Politics Prize for the best performance in the First Year Politics Examination. 
  • Stuart O’Malley is to be awarded the Second Year Politics Prize for the best performance in the Second Year Politics Examination. 
  • Felim O Maolmhana is to be awarded the Third Year Politics Prize for the best performance in the Politics B.A. Degree Examination. 

Postgraduate News

We are delighted to let you know that over the past few months a number of our students have been successful in competitions for prestigious awards:  Joshua Savage who has just completed his first year of doctoral studies, secured a prestigious Government of Ireland Award; Theo Leschevin secured a John and Pat Hume doctoral scholarship and Nur Nadiah Zalini is our inaugural Graduate Teaching Assistant/Doctoral student.

Other News 
 
In addition, a first year Politics student, Michel Barrett, has been cited by the Undergraduate Awards in the 'highly commended' category.

Michel and Aisling Kennedy, first year Sociology students, did stellar work on the Summer Programme for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) interns in the Department over the summer of 2017. Keep an eye on the MU website for more details on the SPUR programme and a call for applications for summer 2018.
