Welcome back to all Sociology and Politics students for the new academic year!
This is a difficult and uncertain time in the world but also one that makes the study of Politics and Sociology more relevant and important than ever. In Ireland, it’s a time of change and major challenges – understanding the inequalities and opportunities in society is central to our degrees.
If you are a new student, welcome to the exciting world of the study of Sociology and Politics. In your first year you will be introduced to the key concepts that we use and to the ‘sociological imagination’ and ‘political vision’ that provides a rich perspective on the world around you.
Welcome back to our students from last year. Second years, we will be working with you on the foundations of our understanding of politics and society, including the skills and understandings needed to research them. Third years, you will have a chance to work on that research for yourself through your thesis. Enjoy and make the most of the year ahead.
There are also exciting new initiatives being developed – we have many Criminology students joining us for second year modules and the new Politics and Society curriculum in secondary school offers new opportunities to teach with your degree.
As the new Head of Department, I am delighted on behalf of the Department of Sociology to welcome all our students to the new academic year.
