The Maynooth social movements approach in global perspective

Tuesday, April 19, 2016 - 11:30

Congratulations to Dr Laurence Cox, awarded a prestigious visiting fellowship (Directeur d’Etudes Associées) at the Collège d’Etudes Mondiales (Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme) in Paris for two research visits in 2016-17. Part of wider discussions about Eurocentrism within the theory and methods of the social sciences, Dr Cox’s research will compare the approach adopted by the International Sociological Association’s social movements research committee under Geoffrey Pleyers’ presidency with that of the Maynooth-based journal Interface in terms of North-South and US-European approaches. In terms of specifically engaged approaches, it will relate Alain Touraine’s method of sociological intervention and Michel Wieviorka and Craig Calhoun’s “Penser global” with the Maynooth experience of participatory action research in social movements, as developed with our PhD students and in the MA CEESA. Profs Touraine, Wieviorka and Pleyers are all active in the Collège.
