Summary
On September 30th, the Inspireurope project held an information session on support in Europe for scholars from Afghanistan. In response to the current crisis, dozens of higher education institutions across Europe have indicated their willingness to host scholars from Afghanistan at their institutions. Many institutional representatives have questions about how to go about hosting a scholar and about the availability of external funding to support such positions. Equally, scholars from Afghanistan have questions about how to apply for support. This information session gathered experts from organisations providing direct support to at-risk researchers & scholars to provide updated information on requests our organisations are receiving from Afghanistan, and information on how institutions in Europe can assist. An extended session for scholars aimed to provide additional information for scholars on how to apply for support. Speakers included representatives from the Scholars at Risk Network, the Scholar Rescue Fund, the PAUSE programme in France, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's Philipp Schwartz Initiative in Germany. The event also served as the launch of Researchers at Risk: National-level actions in Europe, a report of the Inspireurope project. The report was led by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's Philipp Schwartz Initiative and the PAUSE programme and it gathers the experiences and advice of representatives from 14 national-level initiatives in Europe supporting researchers at risk. The aim of the report is to share knowledge and insights between those already involved in these efforts, and to encourage the development of new national-level initiatives where these do not yet exist.

The Inspireurope project and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Philipp Schwartz Initiative in cooperation with the Scholars at Risk Germany Section, hosted the second Inspireurope Stakeholder Forum on April 26-27, 2021.
Acknowledging the growing pressures on academic freedom in regions across the globe, the 2021 Philipp Schwartz and Inspireurope Stakeholder Forum highlighted the state of academic freedom in Belarus, Brazil, Turkey and elsewhere. It reflected on the situation and the work of displaced scholars who have found refuge in other countries and highlighted the work underway in Europe to support at-risk academics and to strengthen academic freedom. It also looked back at the first five years of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative.
In collaboration with Academics in Solidarity, a mentoring programme hosted at Freie Universität Berlin, a particular focus was placed on offering hands-on coaching and information sessions for at-risk academics. Other sessions offered networking and mutual learning opportunities for academic mentors and other representatives of host institutions.
