This event will take place on the eve of the UNESCO World Philosophy Day which is celebrated each year on the 3rd Thursday in November.
Abstract:
After briefly reviewing some of the current threats to democracy and education, Prof. Hickman will examine the linkage between John Dewey’s philosophy of education and other aspects of his technical philosophy, including his characterization of philosophy as an activity, in terms of their potential for ameliorating such threats. He will then briefly discuss some reasons for hope: some educational contexts in which Dewey’s ideas have been put into practice.
Speaker: Prof. Hickman is Professor Emeritus, Department of Philosophy, and Director Emeritus, Center for Dewey Studies, Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He is one of the world's leading Dewey scholars and has published widely on Dewey, pragmatism and the links between pragmatism and democracy. Monographs include:
