Paper Abstract
The "protean" career is a term coined by Douglas T. Hall in 1976 in the book Careers in Organizations. Proteus was a Greek God who could escape his enemies by changing shape. Hall used the metaphor instead to describe those who shape their own careers to match their values. The free agent era has only magnified the relevance of the protean career. The development of constructs to measure the protean career has allowed better insights in the phenomenon. The presentation will review evidence of the protean career across cultures, its nature as a trait versus a state, ties to personality, and limitations as well as emerging research.
