MU Research Week 2021 explores societal and cultural challenges in series of virtual events

Maynooth University Research Week 2021 will take place from Monday 18th to Friday 22nd of October, and all events are open to the public to attend online.

 
The week is filled with a mixture of events including round table talks and Q&As, as well as documentary screenings and virtual presentations. Maynooth’s multi-disciplinary research teams will explain some of their most interesting and important discoveries from the past year, including topics such as climate change, and same sex motherhood, as well as posing questions about the role of robots in the care of the elderly, and asking what Ireland has learned from the Covid-19 experience.

The events include:
 

  • Monday 18th October, 10am-11am – ‘Has Ireland Failed the Covid-19 Test?’ Professor Mark Boyle, Department of Geography and Social Sciences Institute (MUSSI), looks at the challenges of the past 18 months and asks what the Irish government needs to fix if we are to build back better?   • Tuesday, 19th October 1pm-2pm – ‘Circuits of Care: Ageing and Japan’s Robot Revolution 2021’. Documentary screening followed by Q&A with Professor David Prendergast (Director), exploring the Japanesese Robot Revolution Initiative and innovative assistive technologies for older adults.   • Tuesday, 19th October, 7pm-9pm – ‘Same-Sex Mothering: A Roundtable Symposium’. A look at cutting-edge research on same-sex parenting, including insights into the cultural, social, and legal dimensions of women mothering together. Details available here.
  • Wednesday, 20th October, 2pm-4pm – ‘Undergraduate Research Symposium’. A chance for undergraduate students from across the campus to present their research on a variety of topics. Details available here.

By showcasing work from across multiple disciplines Maynooth University Research Week aims to highlight and explore issues of significance to society. The 2021 calendar of activity not only reflects some of the key topics facing communities within Ireland at present, but also explores the future challenges for us as a nation, as well as for the wider global community.
