Launch of Spatial Justice and the Irish Crisis, edited by Gerry Kearns (Maynooth University), David Meredith (Teagasc) and John Morrissey (NUI Galway)

 
Spatial Justice and the Irish Crisis, edited by Gerry Kearns, David Meredith and John Morrissey, will be launched at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin on Monday, September 29th (1pm, Academy House, 19 Dawson Street). The book contains essays on spatial justice in Ireland by Anna Davies, Jon Paul Faulkner, Ronan Foley, Mary Gilmartin, Rory Hearne, Adrian Kavanagh, Gerry Kearns, Rob Kitchin, Des McCafferty, David Meredith, Cian O'Callaghan, and Marie Mahon and John Morrissey from Geography at NUIG. The crisis is set in general context with essays by internationally renowned scholars, John Agnew and Danny Dorling, and an interview that John Morrissey conducted with David Harvey. With Rory, Rob, Cian, Mary, Ronan, Adrian and Gerry, there is a strong Maynooth presence in this collection.

To launch the volume, the RIA and the Geographical Society of Ireland are hosting a lecture by Prof. John Mohan, Director of the Third Sector Research Centre, University of Birmingham, entitled ‘Charity deserts, spatial justice, and the distribution of voluntary resources: bad science, evidence-free policy, and the politics of the “Big Society”’. The lecture examines the spatial justice aspects of the increasing reliance upon charity and voluntarism in welfare provision. All are welcome and there is no fee.
