The study of Dr Sanjay Singh, recently published in the Human Resource Management Review, together with Prakriti Soral, Surya Prakash Pati, and Fang Lee Cooke explores what key resources that workers engaged in dirty work use to maintain a positive sense of self, despite the identity-threatening circumstances of their work context. They found that the workers face dissonance arising from their employment in the dirty work and how they use non-threatening aspects of their self, work and social environment as a strategic resource to cope form the identity threat.
