Dr Amina Adanan of the Maynooth University Law Department has been awarded the Charlemont Grant from the Royal Irish Academy. The funding is for a project entitled ‘What can the United Nations War Crimes Commission teach us about the principle of universal jurisdiction today?’, which analyses the exercise of the principle of universal jurisdiction under the United Nations War Crimes Commission (UNWCC). Thousands of domestic prosecutions of international crimes took place after the Second World War under the UNWCC, which operated between 1943-48.

As part of this project Dr. Adanan will collaborate with UNWCC expert, Professor Dan Plesch (Director of the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy, the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in the University of London). A number of online events for researchers working on the UNWCC are planned. A call for papers for the first workshop will be published in the coming weeks.

Dr. Amina Adanan teaches International Criminal Law on the postgraduate programmes in Maynooth University Law Department.
