Department of Adult and Community Education at UALL & SCUTREA 2025
Colleagues from the Department of Adult and Community Education proudly participated in the joint UALL (Universities Association for Lifelong Learning) and SCUTREA 2025 Conference, held from June 16–18 at the University of Liverpool.
The event brought together scholars and practitioners to explore critical themes such as the evolving landscape of lifelong learning, inclusivity, social justice, and innovation in education.
Dr. Lilian Nwanze-Akobo and Dr. Jerry O’Neill, co-directors of the Higher Diploma in Further Education, facilitated a workshop based on their ongoing research titled “Pedagogies of Discomfort: Challenges and Possibilities of Multi-Racial Co-Facilitation in Confronting Racism in Adult Education.”
Dr. Nwanze-Akobo also co-presented with Dr. Nadine Cavigioli (University of Leeds) on “The Emotional Labour of Responding to the Trauma of Racism and Classism in Spaces of Learning.”
Professor Camilla Fitzsimons, Head of Department, delivered a compelling paper titled “Palestine in Context: A University-Based Teach-In as Pedagogy, Resistance, and Praxis.”
Dr. Nuala Whelan, co-director of the Adult Guidance Counselling Programme, presented her research on “The Transformative Effects of Adult Guidance Counselling in Public Employment Services: A Focus on Learning About Self for Sustainable Employment.”
Congratulations to all our colleagues for their powerful contributions and to the SCUTREA community for hosting such a meaningful and impactful conference!
