Awards and Prizes:
A number of Maynooth University researchers were recognised for their contribution by external awards, and we are proud to acknowledge these, which reflect the excellence of the University across the full span of its faculties.
AWARDS AND PRIZES 2019/20
- PhD student Shirley Howe of the Department of Geography won the Eda Sagarra Medal of Excellence at the annual Irish Research Council Researcher of the Year award.
- Dr Lorna Lopez, of the Department of Biology and the Kathleen Lonsdale Institute for Human Health Research was awarded the SFI Early Career Researcher Award 2020.
- Dr Joanne Masterson and Dr Eóin McNamee, of the Department of Biology and the Kathleen Lonsdale Institute for Human Health Research were recipients of the SFI President of Ireland Future Research Leaders Award in 2020.
- Professor Aphra Kerr, of the Sociology Department and MUSSI was nominated and enrolled into the Academy of Europe to the Film, Media and Visual Studies section in the 2020 intake of members.
- Professor Karen Till, of the Department of Geography and Professor Philipp Rosemann, of the Department of Philosophy became members of the Royal Irish Academy (RIA).
- Dr Nuala Whelan, of the Department of Sociology and MU Social Sciences Institute was awarded the prestigious Division of Work and Organisational Psychology (DWOP) Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) Early Career Researcher Peter Saville Award for Advances in Organisational Psychology.
- Dr Oliver Bartlett, of the Department of Law and Assisting Living and Learning (ALL) Institute was awarded the João Lobo Antunes Memorial Prize in Bioethics by the Portuguese Ministry of Health.
- The prestigious grade of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Senior member was awarded to Dr Indrakshi Dey, of the Department of Electronic Engineering and MU Hamilton Institute.
- Head of Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting, Dr Tuvana Pastine, along with Dr Ivan Pastine from UCD and Dr Matt Coleman from California Polytechnic State University was awarded the prestigious 2019 Brendan Walsh Prize for Economic and Social Research.
- Anthropologist, Dr Thomas Strong, was presented with the 2020 Moher Downing Distinguished Service Award from the Aids and Anthropology Research Group in recognition of his contribution to the improvement of the health of people infected with or at risk of infection with HIV.
- The Jean Monnet Awards under the EU’s Erasmus+ programme was awarded to Professor John O’Brennan, of the Department of Sociology and MU Social Sciences Institute and to Professor Tobias Lock, of the Department of Law.
- Postdoctoral Researcher Dr Levke Caesar, of The Department of Geography and ICARUSwas awarded the Publication Prize for Young Scientist of Leibniz-Kolleg Potsdam 2020.
- The Departments of Geography and Law received the Athena SWAN Bronze accreditation.
- The winner of the overall Maynooth University Research Achievement Award 2020 was Professor Delia Ferri, of the Department of Law.
- Maynooth University Faculty of Arts, Celtic Studies and Philosophy Research Achievement Award 2020 went to Professor Terence Dooley, of the Department of History and Director of the Centre for the Study of Historic Irish Houses and Estates.
- Maynooth University Faculty of Science and Engineering Research Achievement Award 2020 went to Dr Fiona Walsh, of the Department of Biology and Kathleen Lonsdale Institute for Human Health Research.
- The winner of the overall Maynooth University Early Career - Research Achievement Award 2020 was Dr Bernhard Bauer, of the Department of Early Irish and MU Arts and Humanities Institute.
- The Maynooth University Early Career - Faculty of Social Sciences Research Achievement Award 2020 was awarded to Dr Eoin Flaherty, of the Department of Sociology.
- The Maynooth University Early Career - Faculty of Science and Engineering Research Achievement Award 2020 was awarded to Dr Rob Elmes, of the Department of Chemistry and the Kathleen Lonsdale Institute for Human Health Research.
AWARDS AND PRIZES 2018/19
- Dr Mary Murphy of the Department of Sociology was appointed to the Council of State.
- The prestigious Early Career Scientist medal by the International Association for the Physical Science of the Oceans was awarded to Dr Gerard McCarthy of the Icarus Climate Research Centre, and Department of Geography.
- Dr Karen English, of the Department of Biology and of the Kathleen Lonsdale Institute for Human Health Research was presented with the Irish Research Council Early Career Researcher of the Year Award.
- Professor Anthony O’Farrell and Dr Fiacre Ó Cairbre, of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics were honoured with the Maths Week Ireland Award.
- The American Anthropological Association Presidential Award was awarded to Dr Chandana Mathur, Department of the Anthropology.
- Dr Abdullahi El-Tom, of the Department of Anthropology was awarded the 2019 Anthropological Association of Ireland Award.
- Professor Moynagh, Head of the Department of Biology and Director of the Kathleen Lonsdale Institute for Human Health Research, became a member of the RIA.
- The Department of Biology was the first department at Maynooth University to achieve Athena SWAN Bronze accreditation.
- The winner of the Maynooth University Research Achievement Award was presented to the Terahertz Space Optics Group: Professor Anthony Murphy, Dr Creidhe O’Sullivan, Dr Neil Trappe, and Dr Marcin Gradziel.
- Maynooth University Faculty of Arts, Celtic Studies and Philosophy Research Achievement Award went to Professor Patricia Palmer of the Department of English.
- Dr Gerard McCarthy, Department of Geography and Icarus Climate Research Centre was the winner of the overall Maynooth University Early Career Research Achievement Award in 2019.
- Winner of Maynooth University Early Career Research Achievement Award in the Faculty of Science and Engineering went to Dr Ozgur Bayram, of the Department of Biology and Kathleen Lonsdale Institute for Human Health Research.
- Dr John Paul Newman, Department of History, and the Centre for European and Eurasian Studies won the Maynooth University Early Career Research Achievement Award in the Faculty of Arts, Celtic Studies and Philosophy.
AWARDS AND PRIZES 2017/18
- Maynooth University Researcher of the Year was awarded to Professor Rob Kitchin, Department of Geography and the MU Social Sciences Institute.
- The winner of the Maynooth University Early Career Researcher of the Year was Dr Karen English, Department of Biology and MU Kathleen Lonsdale Research Institute.
- Head of the Department of Biology and Director of the MU Kathleen Lonsdale Research Institute, Professor Paul Moynagh, was awarded the Faculty of Science and Engineering Research Achievement Award.
- Professor David Stifter, School of Celtic studies, MU Arts and Humanities Institute was awarded the Faculty of Arts, Celtic Studies and Philosophy Research Achievement Award.
- The winner of the Early Career Achievement Award in the Faculty of Arts, Celtic Studies and Philosophy was Dr Deborah Hayden, School of Celtic Studies, and MU Arts and Humanities Institute
- Dr Conor Murphy, Department of Geography and ICARUS Climate Research Centre was awarded the Early Career Achievement Award in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
- The 2018 Gruber Cosmology Prize was awarded to Professor Anthony Murphy of the Department of Experimental Physics.
- Professor of Psychology and Social Inclusion Malcolm ‘Mac’ MacLachlan was awarded the Royal Irish Academy Gold medal for social sciences.
- Researcher, Professor John Ringwood of the Department of Electronic Engineering was awarded one of France’s highest accolades: The Chevalier des Palmes Académiques.
- The Institute of Inorganic Chemists in Ireland Dr David Brown Prize was awarded to Dr Malachy McCann of the Department of Chemistry, Maynooth University.
- Labour Economist, Dr Aedín Doris, of the Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting, was awarded the 2017 Miriam Hederman O’Brien Prize.
- The prestigious 2018 inaugural Brendan Walsh Prize for Economic and Social Research was awarded to Maynooth University Labour Economist, Professor Donal O’Neill of the Department of Economics, Finance and Accounting.
- Dr John Reynolds of the Department of Law was awarded the 2017 Kevin Boyle Book Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship by the Irish Association of Law Teachers (IALT).
- Anthropologist, Dr Chandana Mathur, was presented with a Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her contribution to the unification in November 2017 of the IUAES and the World Council of Anthropological Associations (WCAA).
