About

Vinícius R. Cota is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at Maynooth University (Ireland), where he conducts research in neuroengineering and medical technology. His work focuses on closed-loop neuroprostheses and neuromodulation strategies for the treatment of neurological disorders. He earned his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering in 2002 and his Ph.D. in Bioinformatics in 2007, both from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil. After completing his doctorate, he held a postdoctoral research position at the International Institute of Neuroscience of Natal – Edmond and Lily Safra (IINN-ELS) in Natal, Brazil, where he worked on the mnemonic role of sleep. From 2009 to 2025, he served as a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Federal University of São João del-Rei (UFSJ), where he founded and coordinated the Laboratory of Neuroengineering and Neuroscience (LINNce). During this period, his research concentrated on neurotechnological solutions for epilepsy treatment, including the development of Non-Periodic Stimulation (NPS), a novel paradigm for seizure suppression. From 2022 to 2025, he held a senior research position in Italy, first as a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow and Visiting Scientist at the Rehab Technologies Lab of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), where he led the project MoRPHEUS – Motor Rehabilitation Plasticity Hacking by Engineered Stimulation of the Brain During the Sleep-Wake Cycle. He later became a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Informatics, Bioengineering, Robotics, and Systems Engineering at the University of Genoa. Dr. Cota is a member of several academic and professional societies and open science initiatives, including the Marie Curie Alumni Association (MCAA), SBEB, SfN, SINS, GNB, Open Science Brazil, and GOSH.
