Trevor Vaugh
Design Innovation, ALL Institute, Mi:Lab
Assistant Professor
Director of Product Design & Innovation Principal Investigator - Mi:Lab
Biography
Trevor Vaugh is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Design Innovation and the Principal investigator at the Maynooth innovation lab (Mi:Lab) - a Higher Education Authority (HEA) funded research project tasked with exploring, understanding and tackling education challenges through design and embedding this capability across Maynooth University and the wider Irish education system. In 2018 he helped successfully tender for, design and launch a ‘first-of-its-kind’ Masters in Design Innovation (food) in collaboration with Bord Bia (The Irish Food board)
Prior to entering academia, Trevor headed design at Advanced Surgical Concepts, where he worked closely with leading surgeons in Europe, North & South America and Asia. In this time he developed new strategy, concepts, products and systems for companies such as Olympus, Gyrus, Ethicon and Covidien, accumulating a portfolio of over 45 international patents. Trevor was heavily involved in the conceptualisation and development of Laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) - a revolutionary access port, surgical methodology and operative system for Olympus. LESS has been heralded as the next evolution of laparoscopic surgery and was featured in the Cleveland clinic's top medical innovations of 2009. `
Trevor’s expertise are in human-centered innovation, strategy and design thinking. He regularly works with and advises public and private organisations on the critical role design now plays as an agent of discovery, transformation and a mediator between humanity and technology. His research sits at the intersection of design, strategy and anthropology, with a particular interest in designing transitions. In both his academic and practitioner activity, he champions the interdisciplinary nature of design, and applies design thinking and action research to areas such as education, policy, housing and healthcare.
Trevor is a board member and co-editor of Iterations design journal, Ireland's first and only design journal. He has given keynote addresses and delivered workshops both nationally and internationally. Trevor is currently involved in a number corporate and social projects including ‘WickED’ - working with colleagues in UCC to tackle the issue of homelessness. With the HSE, he is helping embed a design thinking mindset and toolset amongst front-line medical staff, to empower them to identify and act on improvement opportunities in the healthcare system.

Research Interests
Trevor's research occurs at the intersection of Design, Innovation and Anthropology. He is especially interested in;
(a) The role of strategic design in developing radical innovation
(b) Design thinking as a core organisational competency
(c) Rapid experimentation and prototype development
(d) Design as an agent of liminality, Liminality as an underutilised opportunity for change initiatives.
