I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at Maynooth University and started work here in 2003. I currently teach courses on GIS and Health Geographies at undergraduate level. I was the course leader of the MSc. in GIS and Remote Sensing from (2013-2021) and have also taught on the MA Geography course. My research is primarily in the area of health geography, with significant publications on therapeutic landscapes, healthy blue space, swimming and health care services while I also research on historical and cultural geographies. I have been a PI or Co-PI on a wide range of funded research including current projects funded by the Environmental Protection Agency and the UK's Economic and Social Research Council. Prior to my arrival in Maynooth I worked at the University of Brighton from 1988 to 2003 and I have also taught at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2015 and as an occasional lecturer at Queen's University Belfast and Trinity College Dublin.
Research Interests
My research interests fall into two main camps. One interest is in the area of GIS and Health Care Planning, with particular attention on accessibility and utilisation, health care service planning, mental health and inequalities in general. The other core research interest I have is in the area of therapeutic landscapes, with a focus on water and place and the developing research area of healthy blue space.

I am a health geographer at heart but also have quite a wide range of additional teaching interests both within and outside of geography. In my core health geography teaching, I have two main strands, one more technical and quantitative, the other more theoretical and qualitative. I teach GIS, both in its links to health geography (through mapping of health care services and environmental & public health modelling), but also in a range of general introductory courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The more qualitative work focuses on courses on health care systems and services and also the wider area of health and place, within which therapeutic landscapes and health green/blue space are core strands. I also teach occasional courses/sessions on cultural and historical geographies.
