Biography

I am a literary historian with research interests in the reading of mathematical and scientific texts, and, more generally, the intersections of science, philosophy, and literature in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries particularly across confessional and geographical boundaries.   Utilizing heritage and archival collections in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States of America, my research to date has presented data-driven evidence of the spread of mathematical culture in the early modern period. Building upon this, my current, IRC-funded project seeks to reconstruct networks of Irish readers between 1575 and 1675, uncovering evidence of their engagement with philosophical technical materials in periods of extreme dislocation and confessional strife.

Research Interests

History of science; history of mathematics; history of the book; history of reading; early modern literature; early modern Ireland.
