I was born and educated in the North of England, where I discovered my love of the classical world thanks to the excellent classics department at my secondary school. I studied Classics at Oxford, and then spent almost a decade as a secondary school teacher, before returning to academia out of a desire to pursue my own research. My doctoral thesis, completed at Oxford under the supervision of Prof. Martin Goodman, examined the presentation of Roman emperors in the work of the first-century Roman-Jewish historian Flavius Josephus. Before coming to Maynooth, I taught classical languages at Birkbeck College in London, and papers for both the Classics Faculty and Department of Jewish Studies at Oxford.
