Supporting Afghanistan's scholars: Information for higher education institutions in Europe

Thursday, September 30, 2021 - 14:00 to 16:00
Online event. Registration details below.

The Inspireurope project will host an information session for higher education institutions and other employers across Europe on supporting scholars from Afghanistan. In response to the current crisis, dozens of higher education institutions across Europe have indicated their willingness to host scholars from Afghanistan at their institutions. Many institutional representatives have questions about how to go about hosting a scholar and about the availability of external funding to support such positions. This information session gathers experts from organisations providing direct support to at-risk researchers & scholars to provide updated information on requests our organisations are receiving from Afghanistan, and information on how institutions in Europe can assist. Speakers include representatives from the Scholars at Risk Network, the Scholar Rescue Fund, the PAUSE programme in France, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's Philipp Schwartz Initiative in Germany. Following opening remarks from organisational representatives, there will be ample space for open Q&A with participants.

The event will also serve as the launch of Researchers at Risk: National-level actions in Europe, a report of the Inspireurope project. The report was led by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's Philipp Schwartz Initiative and the PAUSE programme and it gathers the experiences and advice of representatives from 14 national-level initiatives in Europe supporting researchers at risk. The aim of the report is to share knowledge and insights between those already involved in these efforts, and to encourage the development of new national-level initiatives where these do not yet exist.
