Responding to Students in Distress

Thursday, April 11, 2019 - 10:00 to 12:00
Iontas Seminar Room

Often there are indications that a student is experiencing some distress long before a situation escalates to a more serious crisis. To assist our students to maximise their personal and intellectual growth during their time in Maynooth it is important to identify and respond to difficulties as early as possible.

The aim of this workshop is to provide staff who have daily contact with students with the knowledge and information needed to identify and respond effectively to vulnerable and distressed students and minimise stress levels in doing so. The purpose of  early intervention is to increase the likelihood of students being linked with support services which is crucial to their mental health and well-being.

Workshop will be presented by two members of the Maynooth University Counselling Service, which is one of the professional Support Services provided on campus for students.
Kathleen McNutt - Head Counselling Service and Deirdre McDonagh  Counsellor.
Both are active members of PCHEI which is the Association of Psychological Counsellors in Higher Education Ireland.
