The Public Pedagogy and Sustainability Challenges International Network Meeting, a collaboration between Maynooth University and The Ghent University Centre for Sustainable Development, will be held in Maynooth from 27th-29th November. This collaboration seeks to deepen the understanding of the public role of education in the face of sustainability challenges, facilitate further theoretical and empirical research and foster interdisciplinary collaboration among political theorists, educational theorists and sustainability education researchers. The meeting will comprise three public lectures. On Tuesday 27th November, Ailbhe Smyth, academic and feminist activist, will share her experiences of organising the social movement Together for Yes which saw the repeal of the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution of Ireland. On Wednesday 28th, Heila Lotz-Sisitka, Professor and SARChI Chair of Global Change and Social Learning Systems at the Environmental Learning Research Centre at Rhodes University, will deliver a paper entitled ‘Public Pedagogy and Sustainability Challenges: Activism, Action and Change’ from a Southern African perspective.  Her paper will challenge us to think about the connections and tensions between concerns for (public) pedagogy, activism, action and change in the face of urgent and tangible sustainability problems. On Thursday 29th, Glenn Loughran, Artist and a Lecturer in Fine Art at the Dublin Institute of Creative Arts and Media (DIT), will explore the relation and differences between and potential for cross-fertilisation of artistic and education practices in the face of sustainability issues. All talks are in Rehenhan Hall, South Campus. Attendance is free and registration is now open.
