Professor Doherty Discusses the Precarious Nature of Employment in Ireland on RTÉ Radio 1

Tuesday, July 28, 2015 - 10:45

Professor Michael Doherty appeared on RTÉ Radio 1’s Drivetime show on 27 July 2015 to discuss the increasingly precarious nature of employment in Ireland.  The item focused on a recent seminar hosted by the Unite union, Strategies to End Precariousness: The Case for Decent Work.

Professor Doherty has a long-standing interest in the nature and structure of contemporary employment, including 'non-standard' work, and has carried out extensive research in the construction, retail and transport sectors, in particular. His piece in Work, Employment & Society, on how workers in such sectors experienced their day-to-day working life, 'When the Working Day is Through: The End of Work as Identity?' was short-listed for the Sage Prize for Innovation/Excellence and was cited recently in the New York Review of Books.

A podcast from the radio show is available online.

Professor Doherty is Head of Maynooth University Department of Law where he lectures in modules on Employment Law and in Work and Employment in Europe on the LLB programme. He is also an active member of the Political Economy and Work research cluster at Maynooth University.
