Prof. Lorraine Byrne Bodley presents a paper at the Schubert am Klavier Conference, Schubert-Archiv, University of Tuebingen, 14-16 November 2019

Monday, November 11, 2019 - 14:45

Prof.Lorraine Byrne Bodley MRIA will present a paper on the Aesthetics of Friendship in Schubert’s circle, which draws on recent research from her Yale biography.  For all his originality Schubert was a composer whose talent first blossomed through the encouragement and supportive environment of his friends. This paper will explore changing perceptions of friendship around 1800 before the concept of genius was born. It will also illustrate how the training the composer received from Salieri had a profound impact on his composition and performance practice, drawing on examples of his work as an improvisor of piano dance music in the salons of his friends.
Symposion: Schubert am Klavier / Schubert at the Pianoforte 14.–16. November 2019
