Choral Power in 19th- Century England  
Prof. Fiona M. Palmer’s chapter, ‘The Large-Scale Oratorio Chorus in Nineteenth-Century England: Choral Power and the Role of Handel’s Messiah’ features in Choral Societies and Nationalism in Music, edited by Krisztina Lajosi and Andreas Stynen (Brill, 2015). This edited volume is dedicated to an examination of the relationship between choral societies and national mobilization in Europe, and addresses the national and transnational significance of choral singing. More information can be found here.

Orchestral Conducting in the Nineteenth Century

This chapter focuses on the evolution of the role of conductor within the remarkable context of one of Britain's most vibrant port cities and its enterprising and exclusive Philharmonic Society. It contributes to a volume devoted to the exploration of the historical and sociological conditions within which conductors operated in this period.
