New Book by Professor Fiona M. Palmer on Conductors in Britain (1870–1914)

Monday, March 20, 2017 - 09:00

Fiona’s research draws on rich primary sources and contextualizes the work of resident conductors within the rapidly evolving music marketplace between 1870 and 1914. It shows how, at the British Empire's height, their work was shaped by and enriched the cultural life of the nation. The front cover (shown here) depicts one of the eight conductors whose careers are reinterpreted in the monograph. This image, from Vanity Fair, shows Sir Joseph Barnby (1838–96) whose imaginative programming and expectations shaped the development of the Royal Albert Hall Choral Society.
