Ian Dakin has been a member of the RTE National Symphony Orchestra for the past 28 years accumulating an enormous wealth of orchestral experience, performing with a succession of Principal Conductors and a distinguished list of world-class guest-conductors and soloists. Covering the complete range of musical styles both in symphonic music and opera, ranging from the Baroque through the Classical, Romantic and early and late twentieth century and contemporary compositions. In addition, Ian has performed in a freelance capacity with the Ulster Orchestra, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Irish Chamber Orchestra, Camerata Ireland, Orchestra of St. Cecilia, Irish Film Orchestra and many different freelance orchestras including the Lyric Opera Orchestra and the Orchestra of the National Concert Hall. Chamber music is a particular interest and Ian was a founder-member of the contemporary chamber groups, Nua Nos and Sli Nua. Ian has performed at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival and, with Clarion Trio, has performed the classical and contemporary chamber literature for violin, horn and piano at venues throughout Ireland. The passing on of his knowledge and experience is an abiding concern and, since 1988, Ian has been on the staff of the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama as Lecturer in Horn. Ian's students have won all the important national awards and prizes and have been successful in gaining scholarships as well as highly competitive membership of the European Youth Orchestra.
