Ancient Classics

The Department of Ancient Classics offers masters programmes that allow you to dive deeper and explore the aspects of the culture, history and language of the ancient world that interest you most. Researchers specialises in three of the main branches of Classical studies: Greek and Latin literature, the social and cultural history of the ancient world, and Greek and Roman philosophy.

Chinese

The masters in Chinese Studies is designed for those who want to pursue a professional career in the field of Chinese-EU (and Irish) relations, and in business, pedagogical, cultural, and related fields. It provides students who already have a background in Chinese language at undergraduate level with key academic, creative and analytical skills, and fosters interest and involvement in the field of Chinese studies. We are also offering a new suite of specialized postgraduate courses in teaching Mandarin Chinese at post-primary level for 2022/23.

Early Irish

The Department of Early Irish is a leading centre for the study of Medieval Irish and Celtic Studies, engaging in teaching and research in the history, culture, language and literature of medieval Ireland and related societies. Our masters programme in Medieval Irish Studies broadens and deepens students’ knowledge of early Irish literature, language and culture, developing key research skills in preparation for a PhD or for careers in adult education and the heritage and culture sector.

English

The Department of English at Maynooth has an international reputation for producing radical and politically-engaged cultural criticism. Our masters programmes in Literatures of Engagement and new MA Creative Writing develops students’ skills in writing, critical analysis, argument, persuasion, and communication, and equips them with the ability and initiative to be engaged, responsible, and informed global citizens.

French Studies

French Studies offer a range of postgraduate programmes, reflecting the diverse research interests of teaching staff which range from contemporary women's writing to Huguenots in exile. Postgraduate programmes include an MA in French Studies and a suite of courses in Teaching French at Post-Primary level.

Spanish & Latin American Studies

Spanish and Latin American Studies offers personal supervision and teaching by experts in a wide variety of fields, innovative course programmes, and a lively intellectual environment. Our masters and research programmes aim to expand students’ understanding and knowledge of important concepts in the literatures and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, to enhance their analytical, creative and reflective skills, and to cultivate their love of Spanish and Latin American cultures. We are also offering a suite of specialized postgraduate courses in teaching Spanish at post-primary level.

German Studies

Our postgraduate programmes in German Studies offer a well-rounded education in different aspects of the discipline, from Literary and Cultural Studies and Translation to Intercultural Studies and Teaching German as a Foreign Language. You won’t find a more varied Masters programme in German Studies in Ireland! We are also offering a suite of specialized postgraduate courses in teaching German at post-primary level.

History

Our postgraduate programmes in History provide students with a solid grounding in the practice and theory of history and boast expertise in a wide range of specialist topics such as the military operations and strategy, medieval towns and settlements in Ireland, gender in history and politics and culture in the Balkans. We offer masters programmes in Irish History, European History, and Military History and Strategic Studies.

Lárionad na Gaeilge

Is é misean Lárionad na Gaeilge an dea-chleachtas agus an nuálaíocht i múineadh agus i measúnú na Gaeilge a chur chun cinn. Cuirimid cúrsaí páirtaimseartha ar fail ar line san Aistriúchán agus san Eagarthóireacht, ag leibhéal an Dioplóma Iarchéime agus an M.A. Tá na cúrsaí seo dírithe ar dhaoine a bhfuil ardchaighdeán Gaeilge acu agus a bhfuil spéis acu oiliúint ghairmiúil a fháil mar aistritheoirí, mar eagarthóirí agus mar dhlítheangeolaithe.

Nua-Ghaeilge

Tugann an MA sa Nua-Ghaeilge deis do mhic léinn cur lena gcuid scileanna teanga agus staidéar domhain a dhéanamh ar réimse leathan gnéithe eile de chuid Léann na Gaeilge. Tá trí shruth den mháistreacht ann: 1) Cruinneas, Saibhreas agus Cumarsáid; 2) Litríocht agus Critic; agus 3) Na Taibhealaíona agus an Traidisiún Béil (sruth nua 2022/23).

Philosophy

Our postgraduate courses in philosophy offer the opportunity to deepen one’s understanding of the issues encountered in one’s undergraduate studies and to explore new areas as well. Our world is very much in need of people who are willing to ask fundamental questions and think ‘outside of the box’. These skills are developed in our masters programmes in Philosophy, Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and in Ancient Medieval and Renaissance Thought.

Media Studies

Our masters in Critical and Creative Media is an innovative course that combines critical thinking and cutting edge production skills to tackle the challenging environment of contemporary media practices. It provides students with a wide range of media skills across several sectors, including new and emergent media, screen production, media archives, digital humanities and identity technologies.

Music

The Department of Music offers a wide range of taught postgraduate courses that focus on research-led study, drawing on the internationally recognised expertise of our researchers and practitioners. We offer masters programmes in Composition, Creative Music Technologies, Irish Traditional Music, Musicology, and Sound and Music Technology.
