Athena SWAN in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is committed to supporting and ensuring gender equality for our staff and students. As part of this commitment, in 2021 we formed a departmental Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and the first major undertaking for the committee we will be preparing an application for an Athena Swan Bronze Award in 2023.

The current members of the EDI committee make up the Self-Assessment Team (SAT) for the Athena Swan Application. This team comprises a mix of academic, research and administrative staff, along with postgraduate student representatives. Team members include: Niamh Cahill (chair), Gráinne O’ Rourke, Stephen Fagan, Katarina Domijan, Ciarán Mac an Bhaird, David Malone, Darshana Jayakumari (postgraduate rep) and Emma Govan (postgraduate rep).

The key role of our SAT is to identify, discuss, collate information, and report on issues relating to gender inequality and/or inclusivity within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, with a view to ensuring that the Athena SWAN Charter principles are embedded into the culture and workings of the department.

We are currently in the process of collecting and analysing a multitude of data to help us better understand our department and, in particular, to identify our strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement.
If you would like to contact the SAT about our Athena Swan application please email the SAT chair, Niamh Cahill: niamh.cahill@mu.ie.
