Heritage Week Guest Lecture at Maynooth University Library

A Salute to George Victor Du Noyer on the 200th anniversary of his birth by Fiona Ahern, Local Historian and Lecturer

George Victor Du Noyer, born in Dublin in 1817, was of Huguenot descent. He was employed initially by the Ordnance Survey of Ireland and from 1847 by the Geological Survey of Ireland, becoming District Surveyor in 1867. This work provided him with the opportunity to travel throughout Ireland. Alongside his official duties of mapping the terrain and recording geological features, he also sought out archaeological features, recording them for posterity in his drawings. His simple sketches, drawings and paintings also record people, animals, buildings and places, giving a fascinating insight into nineteenth century life in Ireland. He died in 1869.

Fiona Ahern is an independent researcher and lecturer. She holds a Masters in Women Studies (UCD), a Diploma in Fine and Decorative Art (IPAV) and a Masters in History of Design and Material Culture (NCAD). Her M.A. thesis was on the manufacture of bespoke carriages in Ireland in the eighteenth century. A former teacher, she has written for the Irish Architectural and Decorative Studies Journal; the Journal of the Cork Historical and Archaeological Society and Riocht na Midhe and has lectured on various aspects of material culture. A very active member of Bellewstown Heritage Group, she has also co-authored several books on the local history of Co. Meath

The lecture is free of charge however, booking is essential. The lecture will be followed by an optional visit to the Russell Library.
