Michael O’Flaherty, Director of the Fundamental Rights Agency of the European Union, has been appointed as an adjunct professor at the Department of Law. To mark his appointment, he delivered a lecture on the topic of Human Rights in the European Union in October 2016. Prof O’Flaherty was formerly the Director of the Irish Centre for Human Rights, NUI Galway and of the Human Rights Law Centre at the University of Nottingham. He was Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission until November 2013. From 2004-2012, he was a member of the United Nations Human Rights Committee, latterly as a Vice-Chairperson.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and sits on the advisory boards of numerous human rights groups and journals internationally. The Department of Law is delighted to welcome Prof O’Flaherty as an adjunct professor in the field of human rights and international justice. These are areas of teaching and research priority for the Department, which offers modules in these areas at undergraduate level as well as an LLM and PG Diploma in International Justice.
