What protections do Whistleblowers have under Irish and EU law? Dr Lauren Kierans writes for RTE Brainstorm

A recent piece in RTE Brainstorm by Dr Lauren Kierans, Maynooth University and Prof Kate Kenny NUI Galway discussed whistleblower protection legislation.
The recent RTE Investigates programme revealed that the Department of Health was secretly compiling confidential information on children with autism who were involved in legal actions against the State. This breach of privacy came to light after a protected disclosure was made by Mr Shane Corr, a senior civil servant whistleblower in the Department of Health.

Dr Lauren Kierans is a lecturer at Maynooth University Department of Law and an expert in protected disclosures / whistleblowing law. She will deliver the Department of Law Professional Certificate in Whistlbelowing Law Practices and Policy commencing 15th April 2021. The course focusses on the key legislative provisions and case law of the Protected Disclosures Act 2014, as well as sectoral whistleblowing law. It will also introduce participants to the recently adopted EU Whistleblowers Directive.
