Professor Michael Doherty, Head of Maynooth University Department of Law, chaired the opening session at the Victims' Rights Conference, which took place in Dublin on 14 November 2014.

The conference, which was launched by Minister for Justice and Equality, Ms. Frances Fitzgerald T.D., focussed on what requirements will ensure compliance with the new EU Victims' Rights Directive. In particular, the Conference examined how to ensure, in practice, the provision of information to, and support and protection for, victims of crime.

Speakers included David McKenna, President of Victim Support Europe; Sue O’Sullivan, Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime in Canada; and other victim support service providers and experts from across the EU. The conference was co-sponsored by Maynooth University Department of Law and was organised by the Victims' Rights Alliance in conjunction with JUSTICIA, European Rights Network.
