Dr Edana Richardson’s article, ‘Islamic mortgage-alternatives in Ireland: A comparative reflection on a decade of consumer appetite in the face of legislative uncertainty’ has been published in the Conveyancer and Property Lawyer ((2020) 4 Conveyancer and Property Lawyer 275-295). This article was co-authored by Simon O’Neill, partner at Philip Lee Solicitors. This article provides an in-depth and comparative analysis of the accommodation of Islamic mortgage-alternatives under Irish law. It draws on results from two pioneering surveys of Ireland’s Muslim community conducted by the authors nine years apart. Using a comparative approach with the UK it also highlights continuing gaps in the legal framework relevant to Ireland’s Islamic finance market.
