Professor Tobias Lock spoke at a conference marking the 70th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights on 4 November 2020 organised by the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies (KU Leuven). The topic of Professor Lock’s presentation was “The future of EU human rights law: is accession to the ECHR still desirable”. In his talk, Professor Lock discussed the various legal obstacles to the EU’s accession to the ECHR and how these could be overcome. He noted in particular that the compromises that needed to be made with regard to the principle of mutual trust might result in less human rights protection for individuals affected by EU measures in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice than they currently enjoy, which calls into question the overall desirability of EU accession to the Convention.
