Professor Doherty Speaks at IED & EP Conference on Free Movement & Labour Mobility within the EU

Tuesday, November 24, 2015 - 10:00

Professor Michael Doherty recently spoke at a conference co-organised by the Institute of European Democrats and Member of the European Parliament, Marian Harkin.

The conference, entitled 'Free Movement & Labour Mobility within the EU', took place on 13 November 2015 at Maynooth University. It was opened by the Commissioner for Employment & Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility, Marianne Thyssen, who rolled out Europe's Vision for fair labour mobility, ahead of the Commissions Mobility package due to be released on 9 December 2015.

Further information about the conference is available online.

Following the Commissioner's speech, MEP Harkin moderated two panels representing EU policy makers, academics, economists, and scientists that examined the myths and realities around free movement in the EU and a wider EU perspective from countries such as the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and Poland.

Professor Doherty spoke on the first panel, ‘The Current Situation Myths & Realities’, alongside Peter Wilding, Founder and Director of BritishInfluence.org. Professor Doherty recently contributed towards a report for the European Parliament on ‘EU Social and Labour Rights and EU Internal Market Law’, which looked at tensions between internal market law and social and labour rights in the EU. Alluding to this report, his speech focused on four key points:

  1. The Free Movement of Workers and Citizens
  2. The Internal Market and Free Movement of Labour
  3. Posted Workers and Public Procurement
  4. Free Movement and Social Security/Assistance
