Maynooth University Department of Law PhD candidates Florence Anaedozie and Bruno Igwe recently presented papers at the Nigeria Research Day, which was organised by the Department of African Studies & Anthropology (DASA) at the University of Birmingham.

Florence’s research indicates a strong relationship between the systemic grand corruption in Nigeria and the ongoing onslaught by Boko Haram terrorist group. Her paper argues that the systemic grand corruption in Nigeria evidenced by weak institutions has sustained Boko Haram terrorism. It recommends robust anti-corruption intervention particularly in the allocation and disbursement of the military budget and other public expenditures as well as the eradication of mass poverty through the realisation of socio-economic rights.

The title of Bruno’s paper was ‘The Impact of Domestic Violence Legal Regulation and Enforcement in Ireland on Nigerian Immigrants’.  The paper explores the impact of the law in the context of its efficacy in tackling the issue of domestic violence. In addition, it appraises the benefit of adopting a legal approach and effective enforcement in raising the awareness on the preponderance of domestic violence.

Using a qualitative paradigm, within a socio-legal lens, Bruno's research employs a phenomenological analysis of primary and secondary data to explore the role of legal regulation and enforcement in tackling domestic violence.  It interrogates how the regulation and enforcement in Ireland impacts on the Nigerian immigrants’ perception regarding the malaise, comparable to the processes in Nigeria. It also queries if both jurisdictions are protecting human rights adequately within their different frameworks. Bruno is carrying out his research under the supervision of Dr Sibo Banda.
