Maynooth University Law Department Lecturers participate in the Law and Society Association annual conference 2019

The Law and Society Association annual conference 2019 took place in Washington DC from 30 May to 2 June, where the theme of the conference was dignity. A number of lecturers from the Maynooth University contributed to the event.

Dr Amina Adanan presented a paper entitled, ‘The Development of Universal Jurisdiction as a Response to Violations of Human Dignity During Armed Conflict’. This work was presented as part of the International Law and Politics Collaborative Research Network (CRN) panel on ‘Conflict, International Law and the (In)visibility of Human Dignity II’.

Dr Lynsey Black presented a paper on 'Gender, punishment and paternalism', on a panel organised under the Punishment and Society CRN. This paper looked at the experiences of women convicted of murder in 20th century Ireland and the use of Magdalene laundries as sites of confinement for some of these women.

Dr David Doyle presented a paper on ‘Minorities, Dignity and the Right to Education in Ireland’, as part of the Recognizing Discrimination panel. This research paper is part of Dr Doyle’s Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission’s funded project on the Right to Education in Ireland.

Dr John Reynold’s joint paper with Noura Erakat (George Mason University) on 'Lawyers, Laws of War and the Shrinking Civilian' was presented by her in the International Law & Politics CRN panel on 'Modern War, Modern Violence'.
