Maynooth University Department of Law to host English police chief for public lecture

Thursday, September 27, 2018 - 14:15

On the evening of December 3rd, 2018, the Maynooth University Department of Law have organised a public lecture, to be delivered by Mike Barton. Mr. Barton is Chief Constable of Durham Constabulary, one of 43 territorial police forces in England and Wales. His lecture will be entitled: ‘Developing a progressive, 21st century policing agenda’.
A Lancastrian, Mr. Barton served in Lancashire Constabulary for 28 years before joining Durham in 2008 as Assistant Chief Constable and being promoted to Chief Constable in 2012. He also holds the position of National Policing Lead for Crime which he uses to promote new and effective responses to online crime.
In Mr. Barton’s time at Durham Constabulary, the force has been consistently judged as ‘outstanding’ by the annual PEEL assessments undertaken by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services; Durham Constabulary has placed first in these policing ‘league tables’ for the last three years. Moreover, he is known for having overseen a variety of change programmes within his own constabulary and for publicly promoting various forms of police and criminal justice reform. Most notably, he has worked to develop the use of restorative justice, problem-oriented policing, victim-focused policing practices, integrated offender management and public health approaches to drug policing and drug law reform. In his talk at Maynooth, Mr. Barton will speak about these and other approaches which he believes to be central to a progressive, 21st century policing agenda.
The event will take place in Renehan Hall at Maynooth University’s South Campus on Monday 3rd December at 18:00 and will be followed by a wine reception. The event is free to attend, but spaces are limited. To secure you place and avoid disappointment, please RSVP by completing this survey by Monday 26th November.
