Maynooth lecturers present on responses to intra-family abuse at the ACJRD Conference

Monday, October 14, 2019 - 10:30

Maynooth University Department of Law was well represented at the Association for Criminal Justice Research and Development Annual Conference 2019, at the Richmond Event Centre, Dublin, on Friday 11th October.

In the morning, Dr. Fergus Ryan led a conference workshop on "Violence, Abuse, and Coercive Control in Intimate Same-sex Relationships; Legal and Policy Responses". He addressed, in particular, some of the unique factors and issues affecting same-sex couples in this context, particularly the impact of minority stress, and explored various legal and other responses to such conflict.

Later that day, Dr. Ian Marder, in conversation with Callie Zinsmeyer, addressed a plenary session on the potential and limitations of restorative justice in cases of intimate partner violence. Callie spoke of her experience as a practitioner in both restorative justice services and domestic abuse perpetrator programmes, and Ian outlined the theoretical arguments on both sides and the empirical research evidence from other jurisdictions.

Full details of the programme are available here. The presentations will be published in a conference proceeding later in 2019.
