The Maynooth Law Society recently held its first Negotiation Competition

Friday, December 4, 2020 - 10:45

The competition was a two-day event taking place across the weekend of the 27 and 28 of November. There were two preliminary rounds where teams were presented with commercial scenarios and tasked with striking the best possible deal for the client. The standard of competition far exceeded what the organisers and judges had expected.  Unfortunately, due to covid-19 the event had to be done over zoom. Two teams were put into a breakout room together with a judge which ensured the smooth running of the competition.

After many a deal struck and negotiating 4 winning teams were chosen to qualify for the semi finals on the second day where it was clear that the competitors had taken judges opinions and advice on board. The intensity was there for all to see with millions of euros on the line.

The final seen a panel of prestigious judges including Justice MacMenamin of the Supreme Court and Bill Holohan who is a senior counsel. Unfortunately, there can only be one winner with the Maynooth team of Ellen Barry & Jay Kirsten took home the prizes.

Finally a few special mentions to certain people whom this would not have been possible without. A huge thank you to Professor Michael Doherty and Dr. Treasa Kenny who were a tremendous help in the writing of the questions and the acquiring of judges. Another thanks to the organisers, Zuhdi Emara ( President MU Law Society) , Natasha Richardson (Moot Court Convenor), and Niamh Toolan ( Events Officer) who spent countless hours putting this together and ensuring the smooth running of the competition
A huge thank you to everyone who competed and to the judges for giving up their time, and we hope to see you all for next years edition.
