Dr. Neil Maddox presented his poster entitled 'Waste, Bodily Products, Ownership and Harm' at the European Association of Health Lawyers Conference in Toulouse. The poster was composed jointly by Dr. Neil Maddox and PhD candidate Ms. Claire McGovern.
In light of recent scandals in the UK relating to waste management and the disposal of human medical waste, including amputated human limbs, this presentation examines how such disposal might be regulated. Characterising separated anatomical human parts as 'waste' is problematic, both conceptually and practically. The presentation examines the unique harms that may occur to the subject if their amputated parts are not treated respectfully during the disposal process and how such concerns can be adapted to regulation in this area.
