The Law Department held its annual Law Taster Day on March 12th. The event was attended by CAO applicants, who have indicated interest in studying on one of Maynooth’s innovative law programmes.

In a week where it was reported the numbers of women solicitors in Ireland now exceeds that of men (https://www.independent.ie/business/irish/women-outnumber-men-in-solicitors-profession-new-figures-show-36669928.html), the event featured an address from retired District Court Judge, Gillian Hussey, who spoke of her experiences of being one of the few women on the bench on her appointment, and one of the very few assigned to criminal law cases.

The students also heard from our Adjunct Professor of Law, Kevin Duffy, former Chairperson of the Labour Court. Kevin outlined how he worked as a bricklayer, and trade union official, before completing his law degree  many years into his career.

Dr David Doyle and Dr John Reynolds gave a lecture to the students on the rights of prisoners to vote in Europe, from both a human rights, and criminological, perspective.

A number of our students discussed their experiences of transferring from Arts to Law, of doing a year-long work placement with a top legal firm, and of options for further study.  Finally, two LLB students, Daniel O’Dowd and Eoghan Murphy, put on a debate showcase, demonstrating the skills gained in our Advocacy and Negotiation modules.
