To mark the 10th anniversary of the Law Department at Maynooth University, Eleanor Sharpston QC, Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union will give a lecture on ‘The European Project – Past, Present and Future’. The lecture will take place on Thursday 28 November at 6pm at the Institute of International and European Affairs in Dublin and will be chaired by Mr Justice Liam McKechnie of the Supreme Court. Eleanor Sharpston has served as an Advocate General at the Court of Justice since 2006. Advocates General are members of the European Court. Unlike judges, they do not determine the eventual judgment of the Court, but instead provide their opinion on how a given case should be resolved in advance of the judges’ deliberation. These opinions are often highly influential on the outcome of the case and tend contain more detailed reasoning than the actual judgment. Advocate General Sharpston is the author of numerous well-known opinions in particular in the areas of EU citizenship law, EU external relations law and EU asylum and refugee law.
