There is a growing demand for international experience in the teaching profession. However, Teacher Education, unlike other areas of study, is frequently bound to national regulations which can pose barriers to international student mobility. The School of Education at Maynooth University has designed a new Certificate in Teacher Education to address this problem. The programme will provide visiting international students first-hand experience of Ireland’s schooling system. Students will follow the first semester of the Professional Master of Education. As such, they will join Irish students who are pursuing their teacher certification and conduct a practicum placement in a post primary school. This placement will involve classroom observation, team and sole teaching. Maynooth University is the first institution in Ireland to offer a Certificate in Education tailored exclusively to meet the needs of international students.
